Key Responsibilities

  • Provide timely risk assessment (mortality and morbidity) opinions on life, disability and LTC applicants provide opinion on complicated files including interpretation of various clinical tests. Prioritize and oversee requests for advice and EKG interpretations.
  • Stay current with clinical and insurance medicine trends including regulatory. Maintain awareness of emerging public health threats such as COVID and seasonal flu variants. Oversee changes to medical underwriting guidelines and procedures.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, training to Underwriting staff on both an ad hoc and scheduled basis.
  • Serve as primary liaison to underwriting management, with as needed opinion to Legal, Product Development, Compliance, Technology, Marketing, and vendors as needed.
  • Review contestable death and disability claims. Provide advice on cases in litigation.

Required Qualifications

  • Medical Doctor MD/DO
  • 10+ years relevant work experience
  • 7+ years Clinical and/or Insurance Medicine experience
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex information

Preferred Qualifications

  • Insurance/Underwriting experience and/or commitment to pursue Board Certification in Insurance Medicine (DBIM)
  • Maintain an active medical license in the state of your location
  • Ability to present at formal training sessions and also potentially at Industry meetings
  • Proficiency with medical record platforms
  • Comfortable with change and flexibility to be a change agent
  • A generalist orientation with a determination to expeditiously undertake research necessary to custom tailor a precise risk appraisal often for circumstances outside of manual guidelines
  • An innate curiosity to explore areas of Medicine outside one's areas of expertise to achieve a high level of facility, especially in cases where the medical data is incomplete or imperfect
  • A willingness and aptitude to step beyond a strictly medical role to explore the intricacies of the regulatory environment
