Role Summary
Primary responsibility of the Sr. Banking Director is to generate new relationships for Northern Trust's private bank. They are responsible for managing and leading a team of bankers, for growing the banking business (loan, deposit, fees, including swaps) and cross selling trust and investment business. Engages in ongoing relationships with key clients, prospective clients, and centers of influence. Serves as the technical/industry expert to clients and partners. Structures and implements the most complex loans and manages complex credit relationships. Accountable for the performance management and staffing processes for the unit. Oversees, plans and directs activities for banking, ensuring that the goals and business objectives are being met. Actively supports the business retention and development efforts of the team. Job focus is on growth of the banking business while supervising others and applying operational or strategic management skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Generates new banking relationships loans, deposits and fees (swaps, banking and investment management) for Northern Trust
- Leads a team of scorecard bankers, responsible for the growth and retention of the banking business of that team
- Manages a book of banking and lending clients relative to the size and needs of the team
- Sources, directs and participates in the development of new business. Personally sources and partners with the bankers on the team to source. Coordinates strategies for enhancing client relationships and developing new relationships. Individual goals will be that of a Banking Relationship Advisor
- Actively participates in the performance management process, identifies training and development needs, and establishes performance standards for the unit
- Partnering with the Banking Practice Leaders, determines staffing needs, makes hiring and termination decisions
- Participates in salary administration, and ensures resources are available to accomplish priorities
- Participates in developing the team's business plan and sets goals and priorities based on the direction set for the team. Follows through to ensure objectives are met
- Provides leadership and guidance to banking partners, fostering an environment which encourages partner participation, teamwork, and communication
- Researches potential markets, develops client referral sources, and initiates contact with prospects to promote and sell the banks capabilities in all disciplines banking, trust and investments
- Identifies and solves complex, operational and organizational problems leveraging the appropriate resources within or outside the department
- Guided by organization functional business plans, impacts the department results by supporting and funding of projects, products, services and/or technologies
Necessary Knowledge and Skills
- Outstanding new business development skills and experience required.
- Deep knowledge of banking industry and all credit and banking solutions through formal education and experience is required to lead the team and to serve client relationships.
- Investment, trust and personal financial consulting concepts usually through experience are necessary to identify opportunities for cross selling.
- Decision making, negotiation, and delegation skills are necessary to lead the team and develop client relationships.
- Leadership and organizational skills are required to determine team goals, resources needed, to assess and develop the skills of the banking team and to grow the banking business
- Applies knowledge of key business drivers and the factors that maximize department performance
Necessary Experience and Education
- College degree required and 10+ years of banking and credit-related experience required
- Experience managing teams, setting group priorities, and allocating resources to align with business objectives and annual plan
