What is the Opportunity?
RBC's European Law Group are seeking an experienced legal professional based in London to support RBC's European Wealth Management business (WME) with particular focus on investment management services provided by RBC Brewin Dolphin.
As Senior Counsel you will be responsible for providing specialised legal services and support to WME's investment businesses, RBC Wealth Management International and RBC Brewin Dolphin (following the acquisition by RBC of Brewin Dolphin in September 2022).
What will you do?
- Provide specialised, strategic legal advice and support to the business on a range of legal issues across WME with particular focus on investment management and custody solutions.
- Collaborate with business partners and colleagues across other functions to provide legal support and recommendations relating to the development of new products and digital solutions, and ensure alignment on legal and regulatory matters and RBC internal policies.
- Leverage legal expertise, financial services knowledge and external advice, where relevant, to deliver coordinated and comprehensive legal solutions.
- Proactively translate legal, reputational, regulatory and other risks into business reality, devise action plans and engage in timely, coordinated and decisive risk management and crisis prevention.
- Attend applicable business and functional committees as required to advise on relevant law and regulation (including as it pertains to product development and strategic initiatives in new and emerging areas).
- Manage the activities of external counsel to identify the optimal resources for resolving issues and managing the quality and cost of the external services.
- Ensure the enhancement and development of Law Group processes to ensure consistency of approach to advice, delivery of the highest levels of service and implementation of robust processes for centralising and memorialising advice.
- Review, draft, advise on and negotiate client terms of business and investment management arrangements, such as (without limitation)
- Standard terms of business and related client-facing documentation (as and when appropriate) and
- bespoke investment management, dealing, custody, and wrapper agreements.
- Review, draft, advise on and negotiate UK elements of key supplier arrangements as and when appropriate.
What do you need to succeed?
- Qualified solicitor or barrister with robust experience working in a legal role in financial services or a related industry, with specific experience gained supporting investment management and custody services.
- Proven ability to execute on key strategic initiatives.
- Proven business/industry expertise with in-depth, specialized knowledge and experience of UK and European regulations impacting RBC's private wealth / investment management services.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.
- High level of commitment to providing exceptional service to the European businesses and functions in a timely and innovative manner
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and mitigate legal and regulatory risks related to credit and banking products and digital solutions.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other departments within RBC, and with external legal counsel and service providers.
- Highly motivated, pro-active and efficient team player who contributes to the continuous improvement of the Law Group.
- Results oriented, well organized and with ability to prioritize, impact and influence.
- Willingness to adapt and to deal with a range of issues as they arise.
- Excellent drafting skills, with the ability to write clearly and succinctly.
- Displays common sense and good judgment.
Key Relationships
- The candidate will be expected to interact effectively with business and functional stakeholders (e.g. Operational Risk, Business Risk Management, Compliance, Group Risk, Finance etc.).
