Job Description

Human Resources Services (HRS) is an internal function providing global operations and business support across Brookfield's lines of business.

Position Summary

Our global HR team is actively seeking a people manager and hands-on practitioner to own the strategy, design, and administration of North American Payroll as our Payroll Director.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of HR Services, this Director role will be accountable for all phases of payroll management and support, overseeing the efficiency and effectiveness of Workday Payroll and related payroll systems, and ensure processes and systems are scalable, sustainable and are aligned with business objectives. Supporting a population of approximately 7,000 employees within 5 client areas (Corporate, Real Estate, Infrastructure, Power, Private Equity), this position is tasked with creating cost effective and technology enabled payroll processing across the supported Brookfield businesses.

The Director is responsible for providing leadership and mentorship to a team in both New York, Toronto, and other remote sites. It is essential that this individual integrates the qualities of professional, executive presence and acumen, is extremely client-facing, and able to deal with very diverse business practices and cultures. The Director must be an authority on U.S. payroll best practices, statutory requirements (including audit, taxation and other reporting), payroll trends and technology advances, and able to act as the Subject Matter Expert regarding the payroll function. In addition, the candidate must have a deep understanding and proven track record of advising, analyzing, and processing payroll-related public and private equity transactions, multi-national pay, and tax entries impacting international assignees.

Responsibilities

  • Lead our North America Payroll team to design, implement and manage payroll programs across the United States and Canada
  • Management of all compliance requirements for North American payroll operations across Brookfield Asset Management and its affiliates. Lead, develop, manage and implement payroll policies, programs and practices
  • Advise managers and employees on interpretation of payroll policies and practices
  • Support and enhance data audit processes to ensure consistency and checks and balances of data automation
  • Keep abreast of current laws, trends and best practices in payroll, compensation and benefits and proactively evaluate them for potential implementation, making recommendations when applicable
  • Manage general ledger processes and relationships among payroll and accounting stakeholders
  • Partner with the Employee Tax Team and multi-national pay and tax vendor for calculation and remittance process as well as internal HR and assignee communication to ensure seamless end-to-end processing.
  • Work with project teams on automation of payroll processes through HRIS enhancements and implementations
  • Lead and develop a team of benefits experts across both countries, as well as train and execute payrolls across the countries for business continuity purposes (e.g. Canada team can execute a US payroll, and vice-versa)
  • Cultivate and drive a customer service mindset through the team of Payroll Managers, Analysts and vendor subject matter experts
  • Coach and assess the effectiveness of team members and vendors across all components of the Payroll service delivery model

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Experience managing a payroll across multiple locations / geographies 10+ years of experience preferred
  • Highly effective communications skills to collaborate, develop partnerships and encourage trust of vendors, managers, employees and other HR team members
  • Strong analytical skills to develop comprehensive analysis and proposals
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements and ability to assess and align current programs for compliance
  • Demonstrate an ability to translate vision into action, manage multiple priorities, improve operations, and maintain positive and productive relationships while delivering results
  • Demonstrated expertise and leadership regarding payroll requirements of employee equity grants / vesting (options, shares, etc.), including multi-national taxation and expatriate employees
  • Experience with Workday Payroll
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple high priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Employs exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Balances work assignments based on communicated or observed priority
  • Maintains continuous level of engagement between team, department and functional leads as required
