Introduction

Northern Trust Shared Services Technology team is seeking an experienced and dynamic individual to join the Mutual Funds Automation development team. We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer who will be responsible for all development life-cycle events of applications and services along with providing support to our business and technology teams to ensure stability of both production and non-production environments.

Duties and Responsibilities include

  • Obtain a highly detailed understanding of the applications for which the role is responsible with a goal of acting as a technical expert when interfacing with internal and external teams and senior management.
  • Provide technical expertise at the highest-level including training, leadership and guidance to other applications or infrastructure architecture staff, ensuring secure coding and robust architecture guidelines are met.
  • Develop and maintain computer programs including designing, coding, testing, debugging, and installation.
  • Resolve incidents/failures and ensure closure within the service level agreement. Perform root cause analysis and provide solution/work around for incidents.
  • Provide support for audit and regulatory compliance related activities.
  • Work closely with architects and other enterprise stakeholders to ensure solution alignment with best enterprise practices.
  • Provide input into strategic planning and long-range direction for technology in the business unit.
  • Develop technical specifications and guide development for application's business initiatives, technology changes and migrations.
  • Evaluate and select from existing and emerging technologies those options best fitting business and enterprise needs.
  • Thoroughly understand decision process of technology choice, such as capacities, response time, data interfacing, client server communication, industry standard technologies and new industry trends.
  • Provide in-depth technical consultation to clients, partners, and IT management to develop plans and directions to assure the integration of corporate business requirements.
  • Work within an Agile scrum team framework taking stories and tasks during the sprint, participating actively with product backlog refinement, daily stand-up, and bi-weekly sprint boundary meetings.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and design system requirements for complex software development projects.
  • Actively update knowledge and skills to keep up with advancements in industry advances and software.
  • Develop software solutions by studying information needs conferring with users studying systems flow, data usage, and work processes and investigating problem areas.
  • Ensure priority incidents are being addressed in a timely manner to avoid major incidents.
  • Support scheduled weekend activities including production releases and disaster recovery events.
  • Role is balanced between high level operational execution and development, and execution of strategic direction of business function activities.

Qualifications and

Experience

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science or a related discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience in application development experience using Java and other object-oriented technologies.
  • Required expertise
    • Experience working on Cloud based Java applications.
    • Experience in development of Java J2EE applications.
    • Application integration using API, REST and SOAP web services.
    • Experience with Service Oriented Architecture applications and cloud-based services, preferably PCF.
    • Working knowledge of DevOps tools such as Jenkins, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines.
    • Understanding of OAuth 2.0, Ping Federate and Zscaler.
    • Database/Stored Procedure experience preferably with DB2, Oracle >= 11g versions.
    • Knowledge of code version control tools GitHub, Bitbucket, GitLab, etc.
    • Desired experience with Spring, Web services, APIs such as JDBC, Hibernate, Eclipse IDE.
    • Understanding of Unix Shell Scripting and Legacy platform.
    • Experience in messaging gateways Kafka, Solace, MQ.
    • Cloud Computing concepts and deployment PCF (Pivotal Cloud Foundry), AWS (Amazon Web Services), Microsoft Azure etc.
  • Good to have
    • Programming analysis and design expertise with trading applications and knowledge of Capital Markets related acumen and required capabilities.
    • Understanding of Appian low code applications.
    • Working experience on SaaS products.
    • Knowledge of monitoring/log aggregation APM tools like App Dynamics, Splunk, Dynatrace, ELK, etc.
    • Familiar with Linux environment and scripting.
    • Understanding of Test Driven (TDD) and Behavior Driven (BDD) development.
    • Understanding of Business Object or Reporting tools.
    • Understanding of mainframe files and SFTP setup.
  • Team player including
    • Positive attitude and respect for peers works well with both business and technology partners.
    • Excellent consultative and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with internal and external clients, business partners, and technology staff.
    • Ability to learn quickly and think and work independently.
    • Desire to learn and understand the business processes of the applications for which the role is responsible.
    • Shows ownership of work from inception to deployment and support in production.
    • Self-reliant and fully responsible for their deliverables.
