What are Aladdin and Aladdin Engineering?
- You will be working on BlackRocks investment operating system called Aladdin. Aladdin is used both internally within BlackRock and externally by many financial institutions. Aladdin combines sophisticated risk analytics with comprehensive portfolio management, trading, and operations tools on a single platform to power informed decision-making and create a connective tissue for thousands of users investing worldwide.
- Our development teams reside inside the Aladdin Engineering group. We collaboratively build the next generation of technology that changes the way information, people, and technology intersect for global investment firms. We build and package tools that manage trillions in assets and supports millions of financial instruments. We perform risk calculations and process millions of transactions for thousands of users every day worldwide!

Team Overview
The Portfolio Management Engineering team is looking for a hands-on and experienced software development manager who will be responsible for leading a team of developers, overseeing technical projects, and driving the overall success of our strategic product to expand our Aladdin Platform. Working with a distributed team, you will be part of an outstanding group of engineers setting and evolving the technology direction for our internal developer systems and SDLC.
As a key leader within our engineering teams, you will be encouraged to bring your ideas forward to help craft the technical solutions. You will need to have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable communicating your ideas to inquisitive senior leaders. The position places heavy emphasis on both technical expertise in full-stack development and effective people management skills, combined with the ability to mentor and motivate a team of developers, foster collaboration, and ensure the successful delivery of projects.
We collaboratively build the next generation of technology that changes the way information, people, and technology intersect for global investment firms. This team is embarking on a greenfield project, Aladdin PM, to transform a mature PM tool set into an integrated persona-based platform with streamlined user workflows and a high degree of automation and scale. The team works closely with BlackRock portfolio managers as well as helping deliver this to external clients. They also partner closely with world class Product Managers, UX designers, Quality Assurance Engineers and Client Support teams to deliver high quality, scalable and resilient PM capabilities. The team is looking for an ambitious hands-on software developer to work on this exciting strategic product and help upgrade the Aladdin Platform. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be encouraged and empowered to bring your ideas forward to help shape our technology, process, and products. This will help you become a respected and successful player in our diverse team.
Responsibilities include
- Hands-on development while leading other developers to build our next-generation Portfolio Management platform Aladdin PM.
- Deliver new functionality into a microservice-based architecture.
- Contribute to team's agile delivery process, completing sprint tasks and writing high-quality code, unit tests, and automated integration tests to move features to production.
- Provide high-quality technical feedback to team discussions on system design, seeing those efforts all the way through to final delivery.
- Set clear objectives, establish performance expectations, conduct regular performance evaluations, and provide constructive feedback to team members.
- Mentor junior members of the team, providing code style and architectural input through pair programming, reviewing pull requests and team meetings.
- Collaborate with team members in a multi-office, multi-country environment, proactively manage any conflicts or issues that may arise within the team.
- Understand and refine business and functional requirements and convert them into scalable technical design.
- Apply validated quality software engineering practices through all phases of development.
- Ensure resilience and stability through quality code reviews, unit, regression and user acceptance testing, dev ops and level two production support.
Skills and Experience
- B.E./ B.TECH./ MCA or any other relevant engineering degree from a reputed university
- 8 years+ Experience with either front-end web development (such as Angular, React Type Script) or distributed computing technologies (such as Apache Ignite), or both.
- Experience leading dev teams, projects and being responsible for the design and technical quality of a significant application, system, or key component.
- Strong experience with delivering large-scale systems using micro-service architecture, REST API's, protocol buffers, and event streaming platforms like Kafka.
- Knowledge of SQL, NoSQL, and cloud-based database (Snowflake) technologies.
- Familiarity with using modern DevOps tools, CI/CD pipelines, and version control tools like Git.
- Solid experience in a leadership or managerial role, effectively managing and leading a team of developers.
- Domain expertise in financial services and products is an added advantage.
- Experience with coaching & mentoring junior developers.
- Strong foundation in core Java and related technologies.
- Strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Ability to multi-task and work in a high-pressure environment.
- Taking ownership and following through on issues to closure and root cause resolution.
Nice to have
- Exposure to fixed income portfolio management technology or working with front office professionals like traders or portfolio managers.
- Exposure to Micro frontends.
- Some experience or a real interest in finance, investment or portfolio management processes.
- Experience with Cloud platforms like Microsoft Azure.
