What is the opportunity?
RBC launched the Climate Action Institute in 2023 to support Canadians in our collective journey to Net Zero, with a commitment to inform, engage and act on all aspects of the climate challenge. In our first year, our team published 20 research papers, on topics ranging from electricity regulations to mass timber. We've engaged with governments, industries and community groups, to share insights and ideas. We've heard and learned from Canadians at the forefront of climate change. And we've helped launch two groups-the Canadian Alliance for Net Zero Agrifood and the Climate Smart Buildings Alliance-to help develop private sector strategies to reduce emissions.
The Climate Action Institute is looking for a curious, entrepreneurial, and climate passionate individual to help us shape and drive our research agenda on energy transition in the electricity and oil & gas sectors.
What's in it for you?
- You will be part of a small team of researchers and economists, working collaboratively with our publication and engagement teams, client-facing business groups and the RBC climate network to share best practices and thought leadership, and engage with key policy, industry, and civil society leaders.
What will you do?
- Track and analyze oil, gas, and electricity trends in the Canadian and global economy, including the impacts of technology and investment flows on decarbonization efforts and their implications on economic performance, for firms, economic sectors, and the broader economy.
- In collaboration with the senior manager of clean technology, develop data sources to measure Canada's progress in the use of clean technology to decarbonize the oil & gas, and electricity sectors.
- Lead and contribute to internal and external thought pieces, including sectoral and flagship reports, expert commentary, policy papers, briefing notes, blogs and social media posts.
- Engage in knowledge diffusion activities such as client presentations, media interviews, and speeches.
- Participate in industry working groups and roundtables.
Must haves
- Extensive knowledge of the oil, gas, and electricity sectors, key climate and sustainability policies, applied research, national and global climate landscape, climate regulatory environment.
- 10+ years of experience in analyzing the oil, gas and/or electricity sectors, acquired in industry or in a policy analysis, economics, or strategy consulting capacity.
- An analytical and strategic mindset, along with big-picture thinking, to connect and synthesize large amounts of information.
- Extensive experience in leading the execution of projects, from ideation to project completion, and implementation of go-to-market communication and engagement strategies.
- Proven written and verbal communications abilities, to ensure our research is reaching the right groups and audiences in the most effective way.
- Extensive knowledge of and experience in using quantitative and qualitative research methods, to gather primary and secondary data, and data analysis to derive novel insights that are pragmatic and grounded in the real economy. Qualitative research techniques include roundtables, focus groups, interviews, population-based questionnaires.
- A self-starter and team player who contributes their ideas and skills to the betterment of their team, is receptive to receiving feedback, and has a strong sense of personal accountability.
- Ability to maintain equanimity in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities and deadlines.
- Outstanding interpersonal, communication, relationship building and storytelling skills (written and verbal) to interact across all levels of the organization and external sectors with impact and influence, acting as a climate ambassador across the organization.
Nice to haves
- Demonstrated passion and interest in driving environmental and social change within and beyond the enterprise.
- Bilingual English/French would be an asset.
- Masters in economics, public policy, environmental studies, environmental management, sustainable management, engineering, geology, physics
