What is the Opportunity?

Conferences and events are predominant marketing tools used in developing client relationships, enhancing client knowledge, and promoting the RBC Capital Markets (RBCCM) brand, products and capabilities. This role ensures that these functions are successful and align with RBCCM business strategy and goals.

The Director and Head of Canadian Conferences & Events will be responsible for strategic planning and delivery of a broad range of responsibilities and proprietorial and client entertainment events and conferences, including but not limited to

  • Maximize RBCCM proprietary conferences as signature brand events delivering powerful and unique insights, access to RBC executives and high impact experiences
  • Strategic planning and execution of unique and memorable client entertainment events to enhance both new and existing client relationships and to promote the RBC brand.
  • Management, oversight and reconciliation of Canadian Conferences & Events budgets
  • Management of the Canadian Conferences & Events team personnel
  • Proactively introduce technology, tools and processes to position the conference planning team as best in class
  • Serve as trusted advisor to senior leadership and key business stakeholders
  • Work in close collaboration with counterparts in other regions and the broader marketing team, Human Resources & Learning, Corporate Corporations, Corporate Access as well as other cross-functional business groups, including select global and RBC enterprise partners
  • This role has significant involvement with vendor management and compliance, risk and data privacy groups associated with conference & event technology

What will you do?

Primary responsibilities

  • As part of the Client & Marketing Strategy leadership team, you will develop and implement key strategic, cross team deliverables, including
  • Hire and manage the performance of direct reports, including providing ongoing feedback, reviews, career development plans and compensation discussions.
  • Provide leadership to organizational initiatives and priorities outside of own business area as a member of the Canadian senior management team.
  • Oversee the development and delivery of complex conferences and events, from strategic planning, to proposal, to delivery and post event analysis and measurement.
  • Create, organize and manage overall program budgets and resourcing for internal and client facing conferences & event for business areas within RBCCM.
  • Negotiate and manage contracts with venues and other suppliers.
  • Partner closely with Client & Marketing Strategy colleagues in both
  • brand
  • Promote a culture of collaboration with partners and stakeholders.
  • Partner with regional counterparts to ensure global alignment.
  • Partner with relevant marketing groups on the strategic development and planning of signature brand and business sponsorships.
  • Engage on a regular basis with business leaders to fully understand the progress being made by the businesses and better understand how conferences and events support their efforts gain ongoing feedback on initiatives and strategies being implemented.

What do you need to succeed?

  • 10+ years' experience in the planning of conferences and events in an investment banking or financial services environment, with specific experience in strategy development
  • Minimum 5 years as a people manager
  • Comprehensive organizational, project management and time management skills
  • Deep understanding of conference technology including registration, mobile apps and client engagement platforms. Superior skills in Microsoft Office an asset.
  • Ability to partner with senior leadership, external clients and suppliers, with strong, positive interpersonal skills
  • Executive presence, strong voice, ability to operate effectively in high-stress situations
  • Effective, clear and concise communication skills (written and oral).
  • Ability to manage conflicting and changing priorities and challenging personalities
  • Expert strategic planning capabilities
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of business strategy, brand identity, marketing, as they relate to events
