What is the opportunity?

RBC is growing in Australia and is looking for candidates in the Australian Equity Research team across various levels and sectors. Research opportunities are across the Sydney and Melbourne offices. RBC provides investment research to institutional fund managers in Australia and offshore. Sectors we provide research insights across include

  • Technology
  • Small Cap Industrials
  • Infrastructure, Utilities and Heavy Industrials
  • Healthcare
  • Energy
  • Mining

Candidates will be responsible for fundamental analysis of companies in the relevant sector. Companies covered vary from established, large cap businesses to emerging small cap companies. Associate roles primarily provide research support to Lead Analysts.

As you develop, your career pathway includes assuming lead coverage of some companies in your own right within 1-2 years depending on your experience and track record of outperformance in the Associate role.

What will you need to do?

  • Understand and be able to build and update in Microsoft Excel company financial models.
  • Understand how a company's profit and loss, balance sheet and cashflows interrelate and be able to build and link the core items of these financial statements in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to update historical company financials from available public data sources and building company drivers for future estimates in Microsoft Excel.
  • Understand how to value a company using different methods, e.g. DCF valuation, key DCF inputs, comparable multiples analysis.
  • Generate high quality research reports and presentations.
  • Build and maintain databases of key industry data points.
  • Support the Lead Analyst promptly answer institutional investor queries.
  • Inquiring mind to identify risks relating to companies under research coverage, e.g. operational, financial, commodity, political, macro risks, etc.
  • Initiative to find relevant industry contacts to assist in forming a comprehensive view of the company and the operating environment.

What you need to succeed?

Must have

  • Strong interest in equity markets and finance.
  • Willingness to learn and analyse industry sectors and companies.
  • Ability to separate noise from important industry / company insights.
  • Undergraduate degree with a focus on Business, Commerce, Economics, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science or other quantitative fields.
  • Minimum 2 years' full time work experience, preferably in an equity research role or corporate finance role at a bank, stockbroking, investment fund or accounting firm.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills with the ability to interact with CEO, CFO and IR level personnel for companies under research coverage.
  • Strong computer skills across Microsoft Office applications primarily Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to source data and concisely summarise information from multiple sources, e.g. online databases, government statistics, journals, trade publications etc.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritise work and multi-task responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure, in a high paced environment.
  • High degree of flexibility and willingness to take on challenges.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Flexibility to travel when needed.
